An Experience Like No Other

Get ready for the ride of your life. Paragliding is the simplest form of flight: no plane, no windows, just you floating on air. A paraglider is a foot-launched inflatable wing. It is easy to transport, easy to launch, and easy to land! The About PPG Brochure answers most common questions – Available for download and print.

Risk & Reward, The Essential DVD

It is the essential DVD for aspiring Powered Paragliding Pilots. If there’s only one DVD you see about PPG, Risk & Reward with William Shatner should be it! Our sport is probably the safest form of powered recreational flying but there are risks. Thankfully, there are great ways to reduce those risks, too.

Best Practices for Paramotor Activity

Paramotoring is skyrocketing in popularity. Help keep it safe and desirable but most of all, with the exception of some very simple rules in FAR Part 103, almost entirely self regulated. Nobody likes noise polution or irresponsible behavior. Check out the USPPA’s Best Practices for Paramotoring at http://www.USPPA.org

USPPA Tandem Exemption

Tandem Exemption: Wheels
September 23, 2018

Effective now, existing USPPA tandem instructors who are already already certified with at least a PPG 3 WL rating are allowed to do footlaunch or wheeled tandems under an updated exemption 9751E. The primary difference is that the limiting term “footlaunched” has been removed.

A tandem instructor may become qualified to offer wheeled tandems by getting the PPG 3 wheel launch rating from any USPPA wheel launch rated instructor.

You must comply with all other requirements of tandem flying as before. We will be developing a program for those who want to go through the instructor program using wheels only. That has always been possible but never with the ability to do wheeled tandems so there will be some minor changes needed to our programming and processes.

New wording includes the requirement to include information “provided in the FAA Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge and the Powered Parachute Flying Handbook as applicable to part 103 operations” which our existing published program goes well beyond.

As always, there is no cost to members for access to our training program.

Instructors must carry a legible copy (it can be small, though) of the new exemption with them when conducting tandem operations and, of course, comply with the program. We must wield our freedom responsibly, of course, to avoid political pressure to constrain it again.

For now all of our tandem pilots are footlaunched rated so adding the WL (wheel launch) rating is a viable solution. But eventually some tandem instructors may only certify as WL so we are updating our online ratings software to reflect that fact. In the meantime, such pilots will have an internal note appended that says “wheel launch only.”

Here is the PDF of our exemption:
